Online survey to help pick Sioux Falls Super

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) The Sioux Falls School District wants the public to use an online survey to weigh in on what kind of person should be the next schools superintendent. Long time Schools Chief Pam Homan leaves the end of the current school year.

Board President Kent Alberty says the survey is part of the transparency to the community in picking a new superintendent. He says the survey will ask questions in five areas, involving vision, values, instructional leadership, community involvement and management.  The results of the survey will be presented to school board at the end of December.

Police identify victim in fatal car accident

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO AM) - Police identify the victim in a fatal, two-vehicle crash on 57th Street yesterday as 64-year-old Diane Lynette Adler of Sioux Falls.

Officer Sam Clemens says investigators have ruled out speed and alcohol.  He says it will take some time before investigators will be able to say what happened.

The car Adler drove drifted across the center line and hit a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Rachael Mae Johnson of Sioux Falls.  Johnson received minor injuries. 

Adler was driving a 2013 Honda Accord westbound on 57th when she drifted into the eastbound land and struck a 2013 Honda CRV, driven by Johnson.

The accident occurred at about 6:15 Thursday night; a chunk of 57th Street was blocked off for several hours while crews processed the scene. 

Drug robbery and daylight shootout update

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls police arrested five men after a shootout between suspects in a car chase yesterday afternoon.

After police stopped both vehicles on West Avenue they found 30 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of a Cadillac.

Police say three men in the Caddy stole the marijuana from two men in a pickup.

The men in the pickup chased the car through town exchanging gun shots until they were stopped.

30-year-old Greg Windon, 26-year-old Deven Green and 39-year-old Phillip Bland are charged with robbery, discharging a firearm at a car, aggravated assault and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.  Windon and Green are from Sioux Falls and Bland is from Sioux City.

31-year-old Eric Jermaine Smith is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and 29-year-old Rickey Walker is charged with discharging a firearm from a car, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a controlled substance.  Both Walker and Smith are from Sioux Falls

The suspect's hometowns have not been released.

Hartford senator to address 39th USD Winter Commencement

VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO AM) -- South Dakota State Senator Deb Peters of Hartford, S.D. will provide the keynote address at the University of South Dakota’s 39th Winter Commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13. More than 550 candidates will receive degrees during the ceremony at the DakotaDome on the USD campus.

Elected to the South Dakota Senate In 2010 after serving three terms in the House, Peters chairs the Joint Appropriations Committee.  She is the incoming president for the Streamline Sales Tax Governing Board, Inc., an organization that manages a compact between 24 states aimed at making it easier to do business across state lines.

A C.P.A. for more than 17 years, Peters owns a business consulting company specializing in accounting and financial services for entrepreneurial companies. She helps start-up companies in addition to advising companies on issues with the Internal Revenue Service and various state regulations. She has experience auditing highly-regulated entities including, state governments, banks and insurance companies. Additionally, Peters is an active member of National Conference of State Legislators and co-chair of Standing Committees. She also serves as the vice-chair of the Executive Committee’s Task Force on State and Local Taxation.

Peters received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of South Dakota in 1997. She and her husband, Chris, have been married for almost 18 years and have two sons, Derick, 15 and Braden, 13.

AARP survey covers travel preparedness

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - AARP just released results of a survey detailing American’s preparedness to get behind the wheel.

Julie Lee with AARP Driver Safety says drivers of all ages feel that they and their cars are prepared for long distance trips.98% of drivers age 30 and older feel prepared before taking a trip, however they tend to focus more on preparing their car than planning their routes.  

Lee says drivers 65 and up are more likely to consider weather, traffic congestion, establish stops on the route and nighttime versus daytime driving.

85% of respondents felt that having a first aid kit in the car is important but only 60% typically have one in their auto

Gun play at a North Cliff Avenue apartment

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -  Authorities say a 38-year-old man entered an apartment on North Cliff Avenue last night, allegedly threatened the occupants with a handgun, assaulted one and fled taking a one-year-old child.

Chief Deputy Michelle Boyd with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s office says David Jeremy Neuroth Junior is the child’s non-custodial father

After a short pursuit,  Neuroth was arrested and charged with D-W-I, aggravated assault, possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated and abuse or cruelty to a minor.

The child was unharmed.

40 years for drug money death in Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) The young man who killed another in a botched drug money robbery a year ago in Sioux Falls was sentenced Friday to up to 40 years in prison.

18-year-old Trevor Kruthoff of Watertown told the court that he takes full responsibility and wishes he could take back what happened. Kruthoff was recruited to help rob 20-year-old Jordan LeBeau of drug money thought to be stashed in the house. LeBeau's dad walked in on the crime last December and Kruthoff shot LeBeau. 

As part of the plea deal, Kruthoff will be eligible for parole in 20 years.  

 

 

Saturday Shooting Under Investigation

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - A juvenile was treated for non-life threatening injuries after being shot on the east side of Sioux Falls Saturday.

 

Officers responded to call about a gunshot wound late Saturday afternoon.  Responding officers contacted the juvenile at a fire station on South Sycamore Avenue.  The juvenile told officers he was shot at the east side Walmart, before coming to the fire station.

 

Officers had a large part of the east side Walmart parking lot blocked off for the investigation Saturday evening.

 

No one has been arrested.  The investigation continues.


USD recognized for affordability, campus attractiveness

VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO AM) -- The University of South Dakota is one of the most attractive yet affordable college campuses in the United States, according to AffordableSchools.net.

Affordable Schools ranks USD No. 5 on its list of the Top 30 Most Attractive/Most Affordable Campuses in the Nation. Schools featured on the list had to be qualified as affordable – with one or both of tuition fees and total cost of attendance below the national average. Colleges and universities also needed to have campuses deemed to be attractive by Affordable Schools, including factors such as green spaces, views and architecturally significant buildings.

Affordable Schools praises USD for its affordability and aesthetics, stating “whether from in state or out of state, undergraduates will pay less than $20,000 for the total cost of attending during the 2014-15 school year" and "the 274-acre university grounds comfortably combine striking old and new structures.” Citing Old Main as well as the Wellness Center, Affordable Schools notes that USD's campus buildings are eye-catching and eco-friendly.

Sioux Falls, S.D. (KELO AM) - Mayor Mike Huether’s December Listening and Learning Session for the public will be held at the Roll’n Pin Bakery & Café on Saturday, December 13, 2014, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Roll’n Pin is located at 3015 West Russell Street.

Public hearing today on school annexation

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Sioux Falls School District holds a public hearing today on a plan to annex the Cherry Lake development at West 12th Street and the Tea-Ellis Road.

Board President Kent Alberty says Sioux Falls schools would get the development’s residential property taxes.

Alberty says all the taxes paid by commercial interests will go to the West Central School District in perpituity.  West Central School Board is also holding a public hearing on the matter tonight.           

Alberty says the project could be put on hold if the legislature passes a bill limiting increases on capital outlay levies.

Man charged with cruelty to puppy

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A Sioux Falls man is charged with felony cruelty to animals for dragging a puppy on a leash until its feet bled.

Officer Sam Clemens says witnesses saw 36-year-old Trinity Swift Hawk dragging the pit bull-mix puppy late Saturday morning on North Spring Avenue.

Clemens says Swift Hawk gave police a fake name and said the dog belonged to relatives.  Officers could see a long blood trail on the sidewalk.  The puppy was seized by animal control and taken to a veterinarian for treatment.               

Clemens says Swift Hawk is also charged with false impersonation and had outstanding warrants.

Eastside Sioux Falls shooting was self-inflicted

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Police say a 17-year-old Dell Rapids boy, who said he was shot in the leg during a robbery Saturday in the eastside Walmart parking lot, was actually the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officer Sam Clemens says the boy was alone in the car with a 22 caliber handgun while his mother was shopping.

Clemens says police don't know if the incident was an accident or if the boy wounded himself on purpose.  After talking with investigators the boy admitted that he shot himself in the leg.           

Clemens says the boy is charged with false reporting.  He was treated and released that night.

Sioux Falls' good problem to have

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) The unemployment rate in Sioux Falls for October was 2.5 percent, the lowest in six years.

While low unemployment is great news, it also presents challenges says Evan Nolte, President of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.  Workers may easily find jobs, but employers can't easily find workers. Nolte says the challenge is to work hard to attract people to the Sioux Falls area and to encourage diversified skills. He says the area's many amenities and great health care help.

Nolte says the Chamber is working with members on ways to meet the job challenge in the years ahead.

Happy Dragon worker solicited undercover cop

Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM): On December 8, 2014, the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force in conjunction with the Street Crimes Unit conducted an undercover vice operation at local massage parlors. 

A detective purchased a massage at the Happy Dragon Massage Parlor at 3007 E. 10th Street in Sioux Falls. 

Officer Sam Clemens says an employee asked the detective if he wanted to pay for a sex act.  Once the deal was made, other detectives entered the store and arrested the employee. 

Li, Li   44 years old, unknown city, was arrested for prostitution. 

 


SDSU’s Meyers chosen for DoD project

Brookings, SD (KELO AM) - The National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers has selected South Dakota State University assistant professor Richard Meyers as the main researcher and writer on a U.S. Department of Defense project intended to begin the important dialogue between the federal government and tribal nations on sacred sites. The intentions are to explore how sacred sites are understood, and to uphold the continuing need for all federal agencies to recognize the value in understanding tribal sovereignty. The outcomes will further the discussions on how to respect and protect sacred sites for future generations.

Meyers, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, is the program coordinator of American Indian Studies at State.Meyers is a member of South Dakota State's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Prior to arriving at SDSU in 2012, he served as editor and writer in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-Indian Affairs for the U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, D.C. He earned a doctorate in anthropology at Arizona State University in 2008.

 

"As an on-the-ground anthropologist-ethnographer, I'm looking to gather the various perspectives on sacred sites, ways to protect and maintain them and show how integral it is for all stakeholders involved to really nurture a dialogue," said Meyers, who needs to create a questionnaire, conduct interviews and compile case studies.Meyers needs to have at least 12 tribes or communities participate in the project, which has been given a one-year time frame.The National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers recently entered into an agreement with the U.S. Navy, through the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, to collaborate on a project to protect Native American sacred sites within the context of the military readiness mission across the DoD. The project's main objective is compiling a compendium of case studies related to American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian sacred sites.

Council considers 2025 Downtown Plan tonight

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Sioux Falls City Council tonight considers adoption of the 2025 Downtown Plan and its 13 goals.

Community Development Director Darrin Smith says citizen groups worked on the plan for over a year.  Smith says the groups began by identifying downtown Sioux Falls strengths and weaknesses.

Smith says some headlines include rail yard redevelopment, continued development of the River Greenway and residential living that will drive more economic development downtown

Council also has first reading of an ordinance allowing council participation in respective political parties.

Council meets tonight at 7 at Carnegie Town Hall.

 

Commission approves temporary medical waste storage site

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Minnehaha County Commission today approved a temporary medical waste storage operation at the corner of the Crooks-Renner exit.

Commissioner John Pekas facetiously asked County Planner Kevin Hoekman what will happen to the waste.  Pekas asked if the waste would be incinerated or irradiated on site, knowing that both will not occur there.  Hoekman confirmed Pekas' concern that this is just a holding site for medical waste that will go elsewhere to be destroyed.

Hoekman says route trucks will bring waste from hospitals to fill semi-trailers at the site, to be hauled away when they’re full.

Details emerge in Canton computer shop raid

Canton, SD (KELO AM) – Officials have released the details of a September raid at a Canton computer shop. Owner Ken Hunsucker has been charged with interstate transportation of stolen goods for knowingly selling stolen items such as electronics on eBay.

Documents say Hunsucker would purchase the goods, which he knew were stolen, then sell them on the web site. More than $100,000 was taken from a PayPal account in connection with the raid, additionally stolen goods were found in the shop. Charges of wire fraud and money laundering were also handed down. Hunsucker has pled not guilty to all charges.

Cirque Du Soleil preparing for six shows

Sioux Falls, SD KELO AM) — Cirque du Soleil, the international performing sensation celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, makes its South Dakota debut at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center for six shows this week, Thursday through Sunday.

“Cirque” has brought wonder and delight to close to 150 million spectators for three decades in more than 300 cities in over forty countries on six continents.

From a group of a mere twenty street performers at its beginnings in 1984, Cirque du Soleil has grown into a major Québec-based organization providing high-quality artistic entertainment. The company has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 artists from close to 50 different countries.

A limited number of tickets are available for Thursday night’s opening performance, as well as for other performances. The production crew travelled to Sioux Falls in 18 trucks and 27 technicians. On average, an additional 80 people are hired locally on load-in days to load the show and about 100 people on load-out days to pack it all up. It takes us roughly 12 hours to set the show up and about three and a half hours to put it back and head on out to the next city.

Additionally, there are almost 100 moving lights and 330 bamboo trees as part of the production.
