PIERRE, S.D.(KELO-AM) – State Representative Christine Erickson of Sioux Falls has resigned from her seat in the South Dakota State House of Representatives, effective May 20, 2014.
Erickson, a Republican who represented District 11, had declined to run for re-election to the state House this year, and was elected to an at-large seat on the Sioux Falls City Council in last month’s municipal elections.
“Even in her first term, Representative Erickson was a leader among her peers,” said Gov. Daugaard. “I’m sorry that she will not be returning to Pierre, but I congratulate her on her election to the City Council and wish her well as she continues her public service.”
The resignation creates a vacancy, to be filled by gubernatorial appointment, which runs through the end of this year. The appointment does not include service in the 2015 Legislative Session, as the 2014 general election will select state representatives prior to the next session. The appointee could, however, serve on interim committees and would represent the district in the unlikely event of a special legislative session this year.
The Governor is asking the public to nominate candidates to fill the position. Those wishing to offer nominations should contact Patrick Weber in the Office of the Governor at 605-773-5999. Nominations should include the candidate’s name, current address, telephone number and relevant background information.
District 11 includes areas of western Sioux Falls near Roosevelt High School, as well as rural areas to the west of Sioux Falls.
