Sioux Falls, SD (KWSN) – University of South Dakota Athletic Director David Herbster was on KWSN’s Sports Talk with Craig and Chris today, providing reaction to news that Division 1’s “Power Five” conferences (Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, SEC, and ACC) are one step closer to forming a new NCAA division, with the goal of allowing larger schools the freedom to create some of their own by-laws.
Herbster was cautious about the idea, saying he would like to see certain rules such as scholarship limits, revenue sharing, and access to NCAA Championships remain unchanged. He cited the Coyote’s top 10 finish in Women’s Track and Field as an example of how USD can compete with the best of Division 1, despite the widening gap in sports like football.
According to the Southeastern Conference, some of the changes the “Power Five” would like to make include covering the full cost of attendance, providing some form of long-term medical care for injuries sustained while playing college sports, and providing financial incentives to allow student-athletes to finish their degree after their playing days are over.
