SIOUX FALLS, SD-(KELO-AM)--Rain amounts ranging from 4 to 8 inches across the area are causing flooding and detours across the region today. The National Weather Service at Joe Foss Field in Sioux Falls recorded a record 24 hour rainfall amount of 4.65 inches, breaking a record of 4.59 inches set on August 1, 1959. Floods have been a problem on the city’s south side at 57th and Sycamore and on Cliff Avenue between 69th and 85th. Authorities have closed the northbound ramp at 10th and 229. I90 near Beaver Creek was closed earlier due to water. Staff at the I-90 rest stop at the Minnesota – South Dakota border has reported 3-4 feet of water is washing over the interstate there. Many county roads in Rock County, Minnesota also have water over them. Early Sunday morning, the Rock County Sheriff had issued a no travel advisory due to the flooding. Do not drive through waters covering the road. Flood warnings for rivers and streams in southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa are in effect through early Tuesday. Moderate flooding is expected in those areas. Forecaster Mike Gillispie of the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says we are in for more this week, with a potential for hail and high winds with the storms.
