SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -  A phone scam is making the rounds in South Dakota and Attorney General Marty Jackley is advising residents to be on the alert.

Jackley says the callers tell victims that their utility bill is past due and threaten to turn off electricity unless funds are transferred.

Jackley says the callers are convincing but utilities do not call customers about past due bills.

If you get a call claiming your utility bill is past due, hang up and call your local utility.

If you've been a victim of this scam, or any other, or need information call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-3000-1986
