Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - Over the years Sioux Falls has grown and acquired a lot of things – including several restaurants, a new state of the art arena, minor league sports, even the expansion of two health systems and an airport. But one thing has eluded this growing community: A flag. According to Hugh Weber, Sioux Falls is one of just 3 large cities in the nation without what he calls a “suitable flying banner” to symbolize the community.

Weber is chairman of the Committee to Establish a Suitable Flying Banner for the City of Sioux Falls, which is taking ideas and design submissions from community members to determine what will be the official flag of the city. After the July 15th submission deadline Weber and his panel will narrow the choices to a few options, which will be on display for the month of August at the Sioux Falls Design Center.  A winner will then be chosen later in the fall.

Weber says the selection pane is a diverse group, and includes a 5 year old because flags are supposed to be simple enough for even a child to understand. The group has been taking tips and suggestions from flag experts across the country to help craft a flag that is colorful, attractive, distinct, and symbolic.
