PIERRE, S.D.(KELO AM) – Gov. Dennis Daugaard announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded $4.9 million in public assistance funds to the city of Sioux Falls for debris clean-up from an April ice storm.
The funds will reimburse the city for costs of removing debris caused by heavy ice build-up that knocked down trees and tree branches throughout the city, restricting local traffic and downing electrical power lines.
“The April storm caused wide-spread damage throughout the city and necessitated a massive clean-up and debris removal effort,’’ said Kristi Turman, director of the Office of Emergency Management in the Department of Public Safety. “This federal funding will provide much-needed relief for the community and its citizens.’’
The federal funds represent reimbursement of 75 percent of eligible expenses for this project. The state provides 10 percent and local governments provide the remaining amount.
