SIOUX FALLS, KELO-AM) During a news conference today, Mayor Mike Huether explained to the citizens of Sioux Falls why he proposed the ban of alcohol at Van Eps and Tower Parks and provided an inside look at the issues there. The Mayor has made it a point to visit the park and the patrons there in hopes of providing solutions to the many issues identified.

“This is a city and a state where we have high expectations and an extraordinary level of pride,” says Mayor Huether. “Well, right now, Van Eps Park and the activities occurring there are an embarrassment and a true safety concern for our citizens. It is high time for it to stop.”

As Mayor Huether explained, regardless of the resources put forth to help address the issues at Van Eps, the drinking of alcohol at the park is the main driver of the concerns and must be stopped immediately. Banning alcohol in specific parks is not new and has been a very effective tool for Sioux Falls over the years. The River Greenway, Lyon Park, Heritage Park, Fawick Park, and Falls Park all are examples where the ban improved the ability of others to enjoy the parks and also increased their safety.

“We’re not trying to solve all of the social issues associated with this issue, but I do know that there has got to be a better option than allowing drunken, disorderly behavior to take place at the gateway to our beautiful downtown,” says Police Chief Doug Barthel.

The City Council will vote on the ban on Tuesday, September 9, 2014.
