Harrisburg, SD (KELO AM) - Voters in Harrisburg have approved a $25 Million bond sale for a new elementary school and improvements to the current high school and athletic facilities. 1054 votes were cast, with 81% yes (885) and 19% no (169)
The new elementary would actually be built within the city limits of Sioux Falls near the intersection of Bhanson and 68th, superintendent Jim Holbeck said it’s a needed addition because the current schools simply can’t handle the wave of additional students the district has been taking in. “10 years ago we only had one building, this new elementary will be our 9th.” Holbeck added that when he started at the district 7 years ago they had just over 1,000 students, this year’s K-12 population in Harrisburg is at 3,600 students.
Holbeck said that $23.5 million of the funds would be used for the construction of the new elementary school, with the remaining $1.5 million going towards the addition of 20 classrooms at the current Harrisburg High School as well as some improvements to athletic facilities.
Hollbeck says the sale of the municipal bonds will begin shortly.
