SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A proposed bill from three South Dakota education groups would increase the sales tax a penny for three months earmarking the funds for teacher salaries only.
Executive Director of the Associated School Boards of South Dakota, Wade Pogany, says it would give 10,000 teachers a $4,000 raise.
Pagony says South Dakota schools can't compete with surrounding states even North Dakota where, Pogany says, teachers make on average $8,000 more. He says even if neighboring state's salaries don't rise, South Dakota teacher's pay is in a deep hole
Pogany says districts would have to meet certain conditions to qualify for the funds.
He says at th least the proposal will pave the way as a conversation starter for increasing teacher's salaries.
