Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - For the next two weeks, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will have two teams of engineers here to conduct their periodical inspection of the City’s levee system. The periodical inspection is performed once every five years and is a detailed look at our levees and the many structures within the system.
The inspection is to ensure the levee system meets current Corps of Engineers standards and is being properly maintained.
After more than 14 years of work and a project cost of approximately $65 million, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers accredited Sioux Falls’ levee system in September 2014. The current inspection work is more of a scheduled maintenance procedure.
The crews will be driving on the levees and may be encountered by those using the City’s bike trails within the levee system. Bicyclists and pedestrians are urged to be mindful of their surroundings while using the trail system during this time.
