SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls property losses due to fire total between three and four million dollars a year which is much less than cities of comparable size,

Battalion Chief Dean Lanier says new multi-family housing of six units, or more, must have sprinklers, but when the ordinance passed two years ago it did not apply to existing apartments.

Lanier says the only time grandfathered structure would have to be sprinklered is when they undergo renovation.  Still, Lanier says, the renovation would have to be over 50% of the structure.

Lanier says city officials will again consider requiring multi-housing complexes to have sprinklers.
