SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - According to the State Medical Association one in four South Dakotans live where there’s a shortage of primary care doctors.
Association President, Doctor Tim Ridgeway. says the Frontiers and Rural Medicine program expands clinical training to small towns like Platte, Milbank or Parkston.
Ridgeway says the hope is that these students will see the value of being a physician in a rural community, come back and enhance the healthcare of South Dakota.
Ridgeway says it remains to be seen how many return to rural South Dakota after their residencies.
