SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - This National Lightening Safety week a time to remember that lightning kills more people than tornadoes.
Sioux Falls Forecaster Todd Heitkamp says if you hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning.
Heitkamp says your vehicle can be a great place to shelter from lightning. He says if a charge hits your car it will be transported through the metal to the tires which are the only parts of the vehicle touching the ground.
Heitkamp says never seek shelter under trees, poles or other tall structures because they’re more likely to hit by lightning.
