SIOUX FALLS (KELO AM) - City Council Chair Kenny Anderson Jr. today announced the start of the pilot program Dog Days of Summer, which will provide free Sioux Area Metro public transit bus rides until September 7, 2015.

“I am excited for the wonderful opportunities this program provides,” says City Council Chair Kenny Anderson Jr. “Distance is no longer an obstacle for our youth.”

The City Council called a special meeting on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, and unanimously approved a resolution providing Sioux Falls youth an opportunity to ride public transit at no charge.

The Dog Days of Summer program includes the following stipulations:

  • ·       The Dog Days of Summer program shall be for anyone 18 years of age or younger.
  • ·       Anyone ages 11 through 18 may ride unaccompanied by an adult.
  • ·       Anyone ages 6 through 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • ·       Anyone 5 years of age or younger does not require a pass, although they must be accompanied by an adult.
  • ·       Dog Days program riders must present their “dog tag” bus pass to the bus driver for entry onto the bus.

Dog tag bus passes may be picked up at the Downtown Bus Stop or Sioux Area Metro offices by showing proof that the person is 18 years of age or younger. Identification and proof of age require one of the following: 2014–2015 middle or high school student ID card, a driver’s license, state ID card, or birth certificate.

“The Dog Days of Summer youth program opens up Sioux Falls to a multitude of employment and recreational opportunities for our youth,” says Anderson Jr. “This program also has the long-term benefit of encouraging lifelong ridership habits in Sioux Falls.”
