SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Neither the Lincoln County Sheriff or the Harrisburg School superintendent want to turn schools into armed fortresses with metal detectors and armed guards.

Sheriff Dennis Johnson says "we can't have that"  He says that's not our society, that's not South Dakota and it's certainly not Harrisburg.  Johnson says it’s up to everyone to be vigilant and look for signs of potential trouble.

Superintendent Jim Holbeck says it’s impossible to make schools 100% safe.  Holbeck says that true for gas stations, movie theaters, malls or anywhere people gather in public.  He knows people want assurances that it can never happen here, but he says that's a promise that can't be made.

16-year-old Mason Buhl is accused of shooting Harrisburg High Principal Kevin Lein in the arm.
