SIOUX FALLS (KELO AM) - The City of Sioux Falls will offer free disposal of pumpkins on November 14 and 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day.

Pumpkins will be accepted at no charge on Saturday, November 14, at these three locations:

  • Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill, 26750 464th Avenue, Hartford (six miles west of the intersection of Sertoma Avenue and 41st Street)
  • East-side leaf and branch drop-off site, 1015 East Chambers Street
  • West-side leaf and branch drop-off site, 301 North Lyon Boulevard

Pumpkins will be accepted at no charge on Sunday, November 15, at the two leaf and branch drop-off sites. (The landfill is closed on Sundays.)

A separate roll-off container will be available for pumpkins. To be accepted, pumpkins will need to be free of candles, yarn, stickers, googly eyes, and any form of plastic. The pumpkins will be composted at the landfill through the yard waste program. Compost is available for free for residents to pick up at the landfill year-round.

“Oftentimes, pumpkins are thrown out in the regular trash to be buried in the landfill, when instead they could be composted,” says Dustin Hansen, Landfill Superintendent. “This is one way we can reduce the amount of waste going into the landfill, and also provide more material to be composted and provided to our residents for free.”

America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States and observed on November 15. For more information, visitamericarecyclesday.org.
