Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - Rain, wind, and snow – a wintery trifecta is in store for Wednesday as the region prepares for a shot of low pressure that could bring blizzard-like conditions to southwestern Nebraska and thunderstorms for central Iowa, with a little mix of both in South Dakota.
National Weather Service forecaster Brad Adams says the biggest threat to the Sioux Falls area is the wind. “We’re looking at sustained winds in the 40-45 MPH range, with potential to higher gusts of 50-55 from early afternoon through late evening.” He adds that colder air moving through Wednesday evening could switch our precipitation over from rain to snow, however little accumulation is expected because ground temperatures are still fairly warm.
Adams says this first round of wintery weather serves as a reminder to brush off your winter driving skills and make sure your vehicles are ready for the season. “We’re trending into that part of the season where people need to be aware of the threats that winter brings with it.” Some of those tips include stocking your vehicles with winter items like scrapers, gloves, hats, and a winter survival kit.
