Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) A 69-year-old Sioux Falls man was scammed into something too good to be true - even after learning it wasn't true!
Sioux Falls Police say the man was duped into believing he had won millions in the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. The scammers sent him a check to hook him in. Police say he took it to the bank to cash and was told it was a fake. Yet, he still sent the scammers over $11,000 in hopes of scoring big.
State Director of the Better Business Bureau Jessie Schmidt says sometimes the allure of "something for nothing" gets people into trouble. She says the bank did the right thing and if the victim had taken a little extra time to think it through, perhaps he wouldn't have been taken.
Schmidt says Publishers Clearning House will NEVER send a letter or email saying you have won a big prize.
