SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The House State Affairs Committee today deferred to the 41st day a bill giving countys the ability to impose sales and use taxes.
Commissioner Jeff Barth highlighted Minnehaha County’s struggles. Barth says the county has seen a double-digit rise in the numbers of felonies and needs a new jail addition that may cost $43 million.
Business lobbyist Linsdey Riter-Rapp warned legislators to be aware of other tax proposals. Riter-Rapp says there's proposal to raise the sales tax for teacher salary increases and for municipalities. She says passing them all will be a buden on taxpayers.
The House bill authorized a one percent tax increase. The session runs for 38 days effectively killing the measure.
