SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Attorney General Marty Jackley says if Medicaid coverage expands in South Dakota his office will need more staff to cover fraud cases.
Jackley says he’ll need another lawyer and investigator. He says most fraud cases involve paper mistakes because the system has been made too complicated and you have doctors, physician's assistants and their staff trying to treat people and not deal with paperwork
Jackley says there are few instances of absolute fraud, but those bad actors are out there.
He also today briefed legislators on potential liabilities and litigation.
Jackley says tobacco enforcement is worth about $25 million dollars a year. He warned legislators that tobacco company's every year challenge that. He anticipates the state will prevail but the day it doesn't, everyone needs to understand those millions are at risk and those funds are securitized.
Other concerns include Planned Parenthood versus Daugaard, the Gilt Edge Superfund site, Rick Law versus South Dakota challenging the smoking ban, Libertarian Party versus Krebs on filing deadlines, Flandreau Santee Sioux versus South Dakota over use taxes and the state’s challenges to the Clean Air and Water Acts.
Jackley was presenting his department to the Joint Appropriations Committee
