Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) The population of Sioux Falls, South Dakota's biggest city, is now estimated at 173,300 souls - 3,500 More than a year ago.
City officials held a news conference on Tuesday to explain and break down the numbers. Sioux Falls grew at an annual rate of 2.1 percent, slightly less than the year before.
City Planning Official Jeff Schmidt says Sioux Falls is steadily adding each year the equivalent of another Dell Rapids or Canton.
Since January 1, 2000, Sioux Falls has grown by 49,200 people. Over the last 30 years, the Census shows a 24,200-person increase each Census. By 2020, the population of Sioux Falls is projected to be 185,000.
“Sioux Falls basically has added both Aberdeen and Watertown to our population over the past 15 years,” says Mike Cooper, Director of Planning and Building Services.
He says the city is prepared to stay one step ahead with growth management strategies.
The latest Sioux Falls demographics:
- 86.8 percent of Sioux Falls residents are white, 4.4 percent are Hispanic/Latino, 4.2 percent are black, 2.7 percent are American Indian or Alaskan Native, 1.8 percent is Asian, and 0.1 percent is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
- 50.4 percent of Sioux Falls residents are female, and 49.6 percent are male.
- The median age in Sioux Falls is 33.6 years.
- The median household income in Sioux Falls is $51,672.
