SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - An effort to fine tune South Dakota’s Constitutional protection to bear arms failed in the Senate Judiciary Committee today.
Sponsors wanted the amendment to read the right to “keep and bear arms cannot be infringed,” but Republican Senator Dave Novstrup of Aberdeen asked if it’s necessary.
Novstrup says the South Dakota Constitution is fine when it comes to protecting gun rights, and adds that he doesn't see a problem. He says there's also the U.S. Constitution, which too is in force in South Dakota.
Republican State Senator Phil Jensen of Rapid City sponsored the bill and said it reflects a South Dakota flavor to the Second Amendment.
Jensen felt infringe is a stronger legal term than denied.
