SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - December is Drunk, Drugged and Distracted Driving Awareness month.
Darcy Jensen with Prairie View Prevention Services says students in all Lincoln and Minnehaha County school districts were invited to an impaired driving event today.
Jensen says 4-D month emphasizes safety behind the wheel. She says since 2006, South Dakota has lost 62 young people in alcohol related crashes. She says those victims will not be with family and friends this holiday season.
Jensen says distracted driving is similar to wearing a blindfold and driving at 55 miles an hour the length of a football field. She says that's essentially what happens when you're texting and driving.
She says statistics show that in the last 30 days, 23 % of South Dakota teens report riding in a car driven by someone who has been drinking.
