SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The city’s land use committee has taken public input on boulevard gardens and the council will consider an ordinance next month.
Councilor Rick Kiley says the proposal won’t allow everything. He says plants can't be taller than three feet and coniferous or hedge-like shrubs will not be allowed.
The current right-of-way ordinance allows only grass and trees in the parking strip. The new proposal would allow plants, flowers, wildflowers and fruits and vegetables.
Kiley says plants won't be allowed to overhang onto the sidewalk and wood mulch will be allowed on a limited basis.
Kiley says a first reading will happen in March but he couldn't give a specific date. He hopes the ordinance can be in place by May 15th, as the growing season gets underway.
He says more public input will be taken during the second reading of the ordinance, but he says the proposal has been favorably met by most residents.
