SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The House Health and Human Services Committee today approved a bill limiting indoor tanning to patrons 18 and older in South Dakota.
Zach Neugebauer, with Year Round Brown in Sioux Falls, told the committee he’s never had a customer, in 37 years of business, claim they got melanoma from his beds.
Neugebauer says his company has for a very long time done skin safety right, making sure safeguards are in place. He says they've never had a claim against them.
Representative Kristin Conzet, Republican from Rapid City, says the measure won’t shut down the tanning industry. She says it may expand the spray tan industry.
Conzet says the bill is based on studies. Plus, she doesn't want to wait for a cue from the federal government, the Federal Drug Administration, before the legislature protects the children of South Dakota.
