SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Kids playing with fireworks started a fire in a dumpster that caused about $5,000 damage to a north Sioux Falls church yesterday afternoon.

Officer Sam Clemens says neighbors saw two eleven year old boys near the Work of Life Pentecostal Church before two.

Clemens says officers found a pair of boys fitting witness descriptions and after talking with them figured out what happened.

The boys were charged with reckless burning and were turned over to their parents.

Neighbors reported smoke and flames coming from the building at two yesterday afternoon.

Crews kept the fire from getting inside the church.  There was light smoke damage to the interior.

No one was in the church and no firefighters were injured.

The Sioux Falls Fire Prevention Bureau routinely works with ATF to allow investigators on-scene experience that is required to maintain certifications.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with four fire trucks, two support vehicles, and eighteen firefighters.  Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted by Sioux Falls Police Department.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue would like to remind residents that properly installed and operational smoke detectors are the best way to prevent injury and death due to fires.
