SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - It’s a workout removing over six inches of snow from your driveway and sidewalk.

The American Heart Association reminds shovelers that the risk of heart attack increases when moving snow.

Director of Mission:  Lifeline South Dakota, Gary Myers, says the cold and snow can be fatal.  Myers says super cold weather can contribute to the dangers so make sure you're in good enough shape to get out an exert youself.

Myers says sometimes people think that doing a little snow shoveling is not strenuous but it can add up on your heart.

Myers advises taking frequent breaks, don’t eat a big meal before or after shoveling, don’t drink alcohol and use a small shovel to lift lighter amounts.
