BBB warns of CEO phishing scam

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Another twist to a phishing scam that preys on employees who believe they’ve received email from their CEO.

Jessie Schmidt with the Better Business Bureau says this version appears as an urgent request for worker’s W-2 forms.

Schmidt says most employees receiving a direct demand from their CEO would probably be less likely to question its authenticity and fail to request confirmation.

Schmidt says one of the phony messages had the CEO’s photo and email address at the top.  BBB's investigation of the header on the email showed the scammers used someone's GoDaddy email server and the return address was definitely not from the company's CEO.

Schmidt advises being vigilant.  Only open emails, attachments and links from people you know. If possible confirm they are who they claim to be.  Use anti-virus software regularly and enhance email filters to block threats.

Report any suspected phishing attacks to BBB Scam Tracker at bbb.org/scamtracker/us.
