Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) Head Varsity Football Coach at Pierre Riggs, Jayson Poppinga has his wife to thank for replacing a high school coaching legend in Sioux Falls.

O'Gorman High School has announced that Poppinga will try to fill the cleats of longtime O'Gorman coach Steve Kueter, who left the Knights after 33 memorable seasons.

Poppinga tells KWSN Sports Radio that he wasn't even thinking about the position until his wife urged him to apply for it.  It was just what the doctor ordered as Nichole Poppinga is a pediatrician with Avera in Pierre.

Poppinga has coached at Pierre for the past three seasons, the most successful three year period in the history of Pierre football with a 23-10 record and a state championship in 2013.

Poppinga will have to get busy to overtake Steve Kueter, Coach Kueter won more football games than any other high school coach in South Dakota history with seven state championships. He remains at O'Gorman as Activities Director.
