Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) - The National Weather Service say expect high winds, blowing snow and accumulations widely varying across the region today and tonight. It's all part of a late season storm rolling in. Winter Storm WARNINGS are in effect across a wide area. In the Sioux Falls area, the WARNING is in effect from 10 AM today until 1 AM Thursday morning. Dangerous travel conditions are expected. Forecaster Todd Heitkamp at the NWS says locally heavier bands of snow may develop quickly, much like a storm that hit the area earlier this winter, with big differences in snowfall in the matter of just a couple miles. The commute home may be challenging, so check the forecast and current often.

Heitkamp adds thjust 3.4 inches of additional snow is needed to make this winter season one of the top 10 snowiest on record!

It sounds like that record may become reality, as the Sioux Falls area could get up to 8 inches of heavy wet snow. The good news? A warm up is on the way for Easter Sunday and Monday, with temps slowly warming to the 40's and 50's !

Several area towns have already declared snow alerts, and public safety officials say buckle up and slow down if you must travel. Check road conditions here: http://www.safetravelusa.com or call 5-1-1
