Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) The population of the Sioux Falls Metro Area - for the first time - has gone over 250,000 souls, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Sioux Falls Community Development Director Darrin Smith tells KELO Radio that going over the quarter-million mark is a "game changer." Smith says Sioux Falls is now big enough for the largest national retailers and other development groups to really start taking a look at the city for the first time.
Smith says large organizations that employ a lot of people need to know that there are a lot of people in the area they are considering for expansion or re-location.
The new estimates from the Census Bureau show that 251,854 people live in the four-county region that makes up the metro area. The Sioux Falls population has increased more than 10 percent from the 2010 Census.
