SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Better Business Bureau says in the last month-and-a-half, six South Dakotans have lost money trying to buy cars from Craigslist.
Jessie Schmidt says most of the deals involve prepaid cards sent to the alleged seller.
Schmidt says you should make every effort to see the owner and car before sending any money. She advises setting up a meeting at the local law enforcement building. Sioux Falls police repeatedly advise Craigslist buyers to come to their parking lot to see the vehicle and seller.
Schmidt says while Craigslist can be a valuable tool for consumers, she doesn't believe it does a good enough job of weeding out scammers
Schmidt says losses in South Dakota range from $1,500 to $8,000.
Schmidt says a victim near Rapid City sent three OneVanilla prepaid cards for $500 each. Two days later, the seller contacted her saying shipping was stopped because your item is not insured. She has not heard from the seller since.
