SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Senate Finance Committee adopted the Taxpayer Protection Act yesterday and Senator John Thune says it contains some provisions of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights Act he and Senator Chuck Grassley introduced last year.
Thune says the measure calls for a study to determine if states, like South Dakota, without a permanent I-R-S appeal's presence are at a disadvantage.
Thune says other provisions he and Grassley authored include extending the time period for returning money from land sales wrongfully levied by the IRS, imposes new requirements on the IRS on email retention and requires tax-exempt organizations to file form 990 electronically and mandates that the IRS make the information available.
The Act calls for the I-R-S to tell a taxpayer when confidential information has been improperly disclosed after an employee has been disciplined, regardless if the action is criminal or not.
Thune says "American taxpayers deserve a tax collection a agency that is accountable to them and that respects their due process rights.
