SF School District approves corporal punishment overhaul

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -The Sioux Falls School Board has given final approval to an updated corporal punishment policy to help deal with rising discipline problems.

The emphasis will be on crisis intervention and the guidelines for the use of force in certain emergency situations when a student is threatening to hurt himself or others.

Board President Kent Alberty says the policy addresses restraining students when physical intervention is needed.

Alberty says the Board doesn't want staff or students getting hurt when dustups occur.  He says it's imperative that every staff member is appropriately trained when a student becomes unruly.

Alberty says a corporal punishment policy has been on the books since 1990 and the legislature has made some changes so the school board must respond to the fine tuning
