SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The weekend will be cool but dry so backyard grillers will fire up the barbecue and Sioux Falls Fire Marshal Dean Lanier has some safety tips.
Lanier says to make sure your grill is at least ten feet away from your house. He says that includes the eaves of your home. He says once fire gets into the eaves it spreads quickly through the attic and is very difficult to control.
Lanier says if your grill is too close to your house and you leave it unattended for just three minutes the siding can quickly catch fire.
Lanier also advises checking lines on propane grills for cracks and replacing them. He says to also check your connections to make sure they are tight and not leaking.
He says to keep children and pets away from the grill area.
