BRANDON, SD (KELO-AM) A former Brandon police officer has been busted for drugs.

Sgt. Wayne Ellingson resigned from the force after his arrest for possession of the powerful synthetic opitate, Fentanyl. The drug is stronger than morphine and used to control severe pain.

Ellingson released a statement, reported by KSFY TV:

"I take full responsibility for my actions, which were a blatant violation of the public's trust. I apologize to the City of Brandon, the law enforcement community, and my friends/family. I want my disease of addiction to serve as a message to those still suffering in silence to ask for help before it damages their lives any further."

I have sought help for my addiction and am closer to God for it, awaiting what His plan is for me. I hope that in time I can regain the public's trust," Ellingson said.
