SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A new ordinance allows residents to plant flowers and vegetables in boulevards between the curb and the sidewalk.

Code Enforcement Manager Matt Tobias says plants can't be taller than 36 inches, no plants with thorns, no evergreen shrubs and wood mulch may be used on a limited basis.

Tobias says landscaping pavers, edging and nominal-size rock mulch may be used in up to one quarter of the parking strip, but can't spill onto the street or sidewalk.

He says plantings are encouraged in the parking strip as long as they are maintained to create safe visual site lines for pedestrians, bicylists and motorists.

The ordinance will be phased in with this year as education, the city will issue warnings next and strict enforcement of the ordinance in 2018.
