SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - A Sioux Falls man faces abuse and cruelty charges after fleeing police while carrying a month-old child in a car seat.
Officer Sam Clemens says 28-year old Douglas James Parmely is accused of stealing energy drinks from the HyVee at 49th and Louise and stuffing them in the car seat next to the baby.
Clemens says store loss prevention personnel confronted Parmely outside the store. He started running but tripped and fell and the baby started crying. He picked up the car seat and ran out into traffic on Louise.
Clemens says cars had to brake hard in order to avoid hitting him and the child. Officers found Parmely a short distance away and arrested him. Officers took the baby to the hospital to be checked out and it was not injured.
Clemens says Parmely is the child's father.
