No increase in county's opt out

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM)  Minnehaha County Commissioners hold another meeting tomorrow with department heads over next year's budget which will include more money from the state's share of alcohol taxes.

Commission Chair Cindy Heiberger says money is still tight and the cost of contracts and wages have gone up.

Heiberger says the extra money will help because if the county didn't have that the commission would have to consider cutting more things or an increase in the opt out.  She says that will not happen because of the increase in state and fee funds and there's left over money from last year's opt out.

Heiberger says there is not yet a bottom line budget number yet.  She says the Sheriff has offered his budget but the State's Attorney has not yet presented his budget proposal.  Corrections is the largest line item in the county's budget.  She says there is still work to be done on what to do about the jail.

The county must have a provisional budget by the end of July with final approval in September.
