SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -The Great Race features over a hundred antique automobiles in a timed rally from San Rafael, California, to Moline, Illinois, with an overnight stop Friday in Sioux Falls.
Race Director Jeff Strumb says the vintage vehicles will come into Phillips Avenue in one minute intervals over two hours.
Strumb says you'll see a 1916 Hudson Hillclimber, a 1916 Hudson Indy Racer, a 1917 Peerless Racer and a chain-driven 1918 American LaFrance Speedster among other car that can be no older than 1972 models.
The cars arrive in Sioux Falls at 5:45 p.m. The main entrance for the cars is on Phillips Avenue near the Orpheum Theater, with cars parking on Phillips Avenue between 6th and 10th Streets
The public is invited to visit with the drivers and look at the cars closeup. Strumb says some will allow you to sit in the cars. Drivers and navigators are spending the night downtown.
It's not a speed race but a timed, distance rally. The winners will receive $50,000 of the $150,000 total purse.
