Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - As of 8:00 am, NORAD had received 4,500 phone calls from around the world. From deep inside Cheyenne Mountain, Canadian Forces Captain Jennifer Skodnik, NORAD Public Affairs said that last year they answered 7,500 calls all day and this year they were already over half way there.

"NORAD has been tracking Santa since 1955," said Skodnik.  "The technology has changed, but the mission is the same; track Santa and report his whereabouts."

Skodnik said that tracking Santa is done by three methods: fighter interceptor squadrons from around the world give a visual sighting of Santa (as long as they can keep up), then space and land based radars are used.

"Santa moves at a remarkable rate of speed," said Skodnik.  "Just so no one gets surprised, Sioux Falls residents can track Santa's progress on his journey around the world by going to:  http://www.noradsanta.org/."
