SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Blood donations typically drop over the holidays so Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and Police are competing for donors through Friday.
Community Blood Bank Executive Director Ken Versteeg says demand for blood doesn’t slow. Versteeg says the largest users of blood aren't neccessarily sugery or cancer patients. He says thirty percent of the blood is used to treat trauma patients. Those individuals can use up to fifty units of blood.
Versteeg says the competition ends Friday with bloodmobiles at both Fire/Recue on South Minnesota Avenue and the Law Enforcement Center on West 4th Street.
Last year the Police beat Fire/Rescue with 519 donations to 495.
Citibank awards each agency with money to give to the charity of their choice. For Fire/Rescue it’s Children’s Home Society and for Police it’s Special Olympics.
