CANTON, S.D. – A crash occurred in Canton, S.D., Monday morning between a Garbage Truck and a School Bus.
Tyler James Johnson, 41 of Sioux Falls, S.D., was driving a 2002 Freightliner FL70 garbage truck east on U.S. Highway 18 in Canton. He stopped at a residence to collect garbage. Donald Howard Paulson, 66, of Canton, was driving a 2001 International school bus eastbound on the same road and a distance behind the garbage truck. Paulson took his eyes away from the road, and when he looked back to the roadway, he saw that the garbage truck was stopped. Paulson applied the brakes to the school bus, but could not stop the school bus in time and a rear-end collision occurred. Both men were wearing seat-belts; Johnson sustained minor injuries.
Six juvenile passengers of the bus sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.
No further information is immediately available.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Canton Police Department assisted.
