Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Fire Rescue will start 11 new firefighter cadets at the V.L. Crusinberry Fire Training Center located on the Sioux Falls Regional Airport grounds. Beginning on Monday, March 3, 2014, the cadets will report to the training center for their ten weeks of intensive training to prepare them for active duty in Sioux Falls.

This training includes many hours of classroom education, hands-on training, live fire evolutions, and will cover the basic concepts and best practices to ensure the cadets have the knowledge, skills, and ability to handle the duties and responsibilities of a new Sioux Falls Fire Rescue firefighter. Their training just begins with the ten weeks at the academy, but it continues through a structured probationary and apprentice program, with six-month, one-year, two-year, and three-year tests and requirements.

These new firefighters are hired to replace vacancies created by retirements and departures from within the department.

To learn more about what it takes for these 11 cadets to become firefighters, feel free to contact Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, and watch for more information on a media day on April 10.
