SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO-AM) – A Fort Thompson, S.D., woman died in a two vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday, April 2, two miles east of Marion Road on Interstate 90 near Sioux Falls.
Nicole Estella Metcalf, 21, of Fort Thompson was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on Interstate 90, two miles east of Marion Road near Sioux Falls. She stopped the vehicle in the driving lane (right lane) of traffic and exited her vehicle. Driving a 1998 Pontiac Bonneville and also traveling eastbound in the driving lane was Brittany Mary Ann May, 19, of Oacoma, S.D. May saw the stopped Malibu in the lane ahead of her and swerved in an attempt to miss the Malibu, but collided with the back end of it. The collision threw Metcalf to the ground alongside the median of the roadway. The Malibu went into the south ditch and the Bonneville went into the median. Metcalf was air-lifted to a hospital in Sioux Falls and died early Wednesday morning. Metcalf’s passenger, David M. Blackmoon, 21, of Chamberlain, S.D., received minor injuries in the crash. May received minor injuries in the crash. She was not wearing a seat-belt.
South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating why the Malibu was stopped in the driving lane of travel. No further information is immediately available.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol’s investigation is continuing. Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and Crooks Fire Department assisted.
