SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) Beginning Wednesday, April 23, 2014, Public Works Water Division teams will begin the annual flushing of the City’s fire hydrants. The work will begin in the northern part of the city and continue south in the following sections:

  • April 23–May 8: Fire hydrants located north of 12th Street
  • May 12–23: Fire hydrants located between 12th Street and 41st Street
  • May 23–30: Fire hydrants located south of 41st Street

Weather permitting, hydrant flushing should last approximately six weeks. The benefits to flushing include clearing the water mains of sediments, ensuring the fire hydrants are operational, and accomplishing flow testing of the water distribution system.

Work will be performed only on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., except for the downtown area and 41st Street, which will be flushed between the hours of 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Keep track of crews’ progress on the City’s new interactive map:www.siouxfalls.org/hydrants.

If crews have been working in your area, check the cold tap water for clarity before doing laundry. Users that notice discoloration should run their cold water faucet for a few minutes or until the water clears prior to use. Water discoloration due to the flushing program does not pose a health threat and may be used, but could cause staining.

Motorists should be aware of the presence of the field crews and avoid any water flowing from hydrants.

If you have questions regarding water quality, contact the Water Purification Plant at 373-6950 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or 367-8805 after office hours. More information also is available at www.siouxfalls.org/purification.
