SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Police are seeing an uptick in thefts from unlocked cars over the last couple of weeks.
Officer Sam Clemens says the crime of opportunity occurs year-round in every neighborhood.
Clemens says if you have to leave valuables in your car hide them. He says it's best to not leave items in your car but sometimes that's not practical. The bottom line is to lock your car whenever you get out, no matter where you're at or what you're doing.
He says your car is not safe even if it's locked and you leave your windown rolled down a crack. Thieves can use a tool and open up your car.
Clemens says larceny from cars is a quick crime that rarely has any witnesses. He says that makes it difficult to catch the thieves.
