SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - U.S. Senator Tim Johnson says some consider the problems at the Veterans Administration to be systemic, but he says the Sioux Falls V.A. provides quality, timely healthcare.
Johnson says “Like all Americans, I am upset by the stories over the last few months of misconduct and secret waiting lists at certain VA facilities. We must fix the problems where they exist and support those VA medical centers that are doing well so that all veterans can depend on the VA system for excellent care.” He added the upcomming Independence Day holiday should be a reminder of the sacrifice of so many brave men and women that have walked and will walk through the doors of the VA.
V.A. Director Darwin Goodspeed says there’s no secret waiting list in Sioux Falls. Goodspeed says the wait times at the facility are being managed carefully and are very good. He says if the Sioux Falls V.A. can't get to a patient in a timely manner, they work with private healthcare facilities to see the veteran.
Goodspeed says, as a veteran himself, he and his staff strive to make sure veterans get the healthcare benefits they’ve earned.
Goodspeed says the Sioux Falls V.A. cares for 28,000 veterans.
The V.A. Inspector General is currently reviewing the scheduling procedures, wait times and management practices systemwide.
