(Sioux Falls, SD) (KELO AM) Six people have died in multiple accidents in South Dakota this weekend.
A Brandon, S.D., couple died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 in a construction zone near Brookings on Saturday, August 3.
Richard Leonard Feltmann, 61, was driving a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle south on I-29. Janis Feltmann, 61, was a passenger on the motorcycle. In a construction zone with head-to-head traffic, the motorcycle veered into the lane of northbound traffic and struck a 2006 Chevrolet Uplander driven by Lynne Louise Duin, 60, of Estelline, S.D.
The Feltmanns, who were not wearing helmets, died at the scene. Duin, who was wearing a seatbelt, received serious injuries and was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital.
A Canadian man died on Saturday, August 3, when the motorcycle he was riding crashed on Nemo Road in western South Dakota.
Roberto L. Gasbar, 56, of Edmonton, Alberta, was eastbound riding a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle when the vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and overturned. Gasbar was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.
An Ohio woman died on Saturday, August 3, when the motorcycle she was riding struck debris on Interstate 29 near Elk Point.
Carolee Weaver, 49, of Luckey, Ohio, was northbound riding a 1992 Harley Davidson motorcycle. She was riding in a staggered formation of four motorcycles. The lead rider, Brent A. Weaver, 52, of Luckey, Ohio, was riding a 1983 Harley Davidson. At the crest of a hill, he saw a tire and wheel in the driving lane. His motorcycle hit the tire and went down. The collision knocked the tire into the path of Carolee Weaver’s motorcycle, which struck it. Both riders were thrown from their motorcycles.
Carolee Weaver was dead at the scene. Brent Weaver was taken to a Sioux City hospital with serious injuries. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
A Watertown woman died in a one-vehicle crash on 4th Avenue SW a mile west of Watertown on Saturday, August 3.
Chasity Rae Owen-Amos, 22, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer west on 4th Avenue near Lake Kampeska. The vehicle left the roadway to the left, rolled into a field and caught fire. Owen-Amos received fatal injuries in the crash. She was not wearing a seatbelt.
A Minnesota woman died in a two-vehicle crash in western South Dakota Friday, August 2.
Tiffany Lynn Nelson, 25, of North Mankato, was the passenger on a 1998 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Bradley Carl Olson, 31, of North Mankato. The motorcycle was northbound on Highway 385. A 2008 Toyota Tundra driven by Cory James Allen Nash, 22, of Ellsworth Air Force Base, attempted to turn south onto Highway 385 from West Highway 44. The Toyota pulled in front of the motorcycle, and the motorcycle struck the rear driver’s side of the Toyota.
Olson and Nelson were thrown from the motorcycle. Nelson died at the scene. Olson received minor injuries. Both were wearing helmets.
Nash and a passenger in the Toyota, Cecilia Nash, 21, of Rapid City, were uninjured. Both were wearing seatbelts.
